Do you need to pre-drill decking before screwing?

Most of the time you do not. The sharp point and ribbed head let these screws sink into softwood boards on their own. If you are fixing close to the end of a board, or working with a dense or brittle hardwood, drill a small pilot hole first. That keeps the timber from splitting.

What spacing should I use, and how many screws per board?
