Description

These are TIMCO self-drilling plasterboard screws in a silver zinc finish. The sharp No.2 drill point cuts its own hole as it goes, so you can fix plasterboard straight onto heavier metal stud and track without pre-drilling. They bite into steel sections up to 2.0mm thick. That's where they differ from standard fine thread drywall screws, which only cope with light gauge steel up to around 0.6mm. If your framing is a thicker gauge and a fine screw just spins or snaps, this is the screw you want.

The bugle head pulls in flush and countersinks itself into the board without tearing the paper face. A Phillips PH2 recess gives you a positive drive, and there's an S2 driver bit in the box to get you started. Fully threaded for a firm hold, carbon steel for strength.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Self-drilling No.2 point. Drills its own pilot hole into steel up to 2.0mm, so no pre-drilling on heavier gauge stud or track.
  • Handles thicker steel than fine screws. Standard fine thread plasterboard screws cap out near 0.6mm. These go up to 2.0mm.
  • Bugle head. Countersinks cleanly and sits flush without ripping the board surface.
  • Phillips PH2 recess. Positive drive with less cam-out. S2 bit included.
  • Fully threaded, self-tapping. Grips along the full length for a solid fix.
  • Silver zinc finish. Carbon steel with a Corrosion Rating 1 coating for interior work.
  • Fire Classification A1. Non-combustible, tested to BS EN 14566:2008.

Usage / Application

Use these for fixing plasterboard to metal wall and ceiling track where the steel is on the heavier side, up to 2.0mm thick. Think structural stud partitions, ceiling grids and framing that a fine thread screw won't get through. The self-drilling tip does the hard work, so there's no stopping to drill pilot holes first.

If you're working with light gauge sections at 0.6mm or under, our fine thread plasterboard screws are the better match and cost less. Reach for these self-drilling ones when the standard screw can't punch through the steel. For interior use only.

FAQs

What's the difference between self-drilling and fine thread plasterboard screws?

Fine thread screws have a sharp gimlet point that suits light gauge steel up to about 0.6mm. A self-drilling screw has a drill-bit style No.2 point that cuts through much thicker steel, up to 2.0mm here. If your stud or track is a heavier gauge, the fine screw will struggle and the self-drilling one won't.

Do I need to pre-drill before using these?

No. The self-drilling tip forms its own hole as you drive it, right through steel up to 2.0mm. That's the whole point of the screw. Just line it up and drive.

What's the maximum steel thickness these will drill?

The 3.5mm diameter screws drill into metal wall and ceiling track up to 2.0mm thick. Longer, thicker screws in the TIMCO range go further, but this size is rated to 2.0mm.

Can I use these outside?

No. They carry a Corrosion Rating of 1, which is for clean, dry interior conditions. For exterior or damp work you'll need a screw with a higher corrosion rating.

What driver bit do I need?

A Phillips PH2 bit. There's an S2 bit supplied in the box, so you're ready to go.

Are these fire rated?

Yes. They hold a Fire Classification of A1, meaning non-combustible, and they're manufactured to BS EN 14566:2008.
