Description

These are hex head roofing screws for fixing thin metal sheet down to timber. Use them to hold box profile and corrugated roofing or cladding sheets onto timber purlins, rails and battens. The single slash point self taps straight into the timber. Each screw comes with a 16mm EPDM sealing washer under the head, so the fixing stays weathertight once it's driven home. The Exterior Silver Organic finish keeps them working outside for the long run.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Hex head with an 8mm socket. Drive them fast and true with a nut runner or an impact driver. No cam out, no chewed heads.
  • Single slash point. It cuts its own path into the timber. That drops the torque needed and lowers the risk of splitting a batten near the edge.
  • 16mm EPDM sealing washer. The rubber bonded washer squashes flat against the sheet as you tighten. It seals the hole and keeps rain out.
  • 60 degree single deep thread, fully threaded. It grips hard the whole length and pulls the sheet tight against the timber.
  • Case and core hardened carbon steel. Hard on the outside for a clean bite, tough in the core so it won't snap under the driver.
  • Built for outdoors. The Exterior Silver Organic finish carries a Corrosion Rating of 3 and holds up past 500 hours of salt spray testing.
  • 6.3mm diameter. Fixes sheet metal up to 0.8mm thick to timber.

FAQs

What is the EPDM washer for?

It's a rubber sealing washer sat under the hex head. As you drive the screw home the washer squashes flat against the metal sheet. That seals the hole around the screw and stops rain getting through. It's what keeps a roof or cladding fixing weathertight.

Will these fix into timber or steel purlins?

Timber only. The slash point self taps into timber battens and purlins. It won't drill through a steel purlin. If your frame is steel, reach for a self drilling tek screw instead.

Do I need to pre-drill?

Not in the timber, no. The single slash point cuts its own way in and keeps splitting down near the edge. You do drive the screw through a pre-punched or pre-drilled hole in the metal sheet though. Run your driver at around 1,000 to 1,800 rpm and ease right off as the washer meets the sheet, so you don't crush it.

What is the maximum sheet thickness these will fix?

They fix sheet metal up to 0.8mm thick to timber. That covers most box profile and corrugated roofing and cladding sheets. For heavier gauge steel you'll want a heavier duty fixing.

What finish are they and will they last outside?

They're Exterior Silver Organic. That finish carries a Corrosion Rating of 3 and gets past 500 hours of salt spray testing, so it suits exposed roofs and walls.

How tight should I do them up?

Snug, not gorilla tight. Drive until the EPDM washer just spreads and sits flat on the sheet. Go too far and you dish the sheet or split the washer, which lets water back in.
