Description

TIMCO Timber Screws (Hex Flange Head, Exterior Green) are heavy-duty structural screws built to replace the old coach screw on timber-to-timber jobs. The external hex drive means you can run them in fast with an 8mm socket, and they seat accurately without camming out. The flange head and fixed washer pull the timber up tight, so there's no faffing with a separate penny washer. A patented multi-layer plating rated to 1,000 hours salt spray keeps them protected outside, which is why they suit exterior structural and landscaping work in the British weather.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Coach screw alternative: swaps out the traditional coach screw on timber-to-timber connections, driving faster with a cleaner finish.
  • External hex drive (8mm socket / AF): high-torque driving with an impact driver or socket, and no bit slip or cam-out.
  • Hex flange head with fixed washer: spreads the clamping load and pulls the joint tight, so you don't need a loose washer.
  • 50° single deep, partially threaded shank: the unthreaded upper shank draws the two timbers together for a tight clamp and strong pull-out resistance.
  • 25° sharp point with a single slash: bites quickly and starts clean, so most timber won't need a pilot hole.
  • Helix shank: clears debris as it drives and improves clamping.
  • 1,000-hour salt-spray corrosion protection: patented multi-layer plating, tested to BS EN ISO 9227, for confident use outdoors.
  • Olive-green exterior organic finish: sits discreetly against treated timber, decking and sleepers.
  • 6.7mm diameter, long lengths: lengths run from roughly 60mm up to 250mm for deep structural fixings.

Usage / Application

These are made for exterior structural carpentry and hard landscaping. They're a go-to fixing for the trade and for serious DIY:

  • Landscaping & sleepers: fixing railway sleepers, raised beds, retaining walls and garden structures.
  • Decking: securing joists, bearers and sub-frames.
  • Fencing: posts, rails, gravel boards and heavy fence framework.
  • Timber framing & construction: timber-to-timber structural connections.
  • Also suited to stairs, roofing, gazebos and pergolas.

They work in both hardwood and softwood substrates.

FAQs

Do you need to pre-drill for these timber screws?

For most timber, no. The 25° sharp point with a single slash and the aggressive 50° thread start and drive without a pilot hole, which a traditional coach screw can't do. Run them in with high torque and low speed. Near the end of a board, in dense hardwood, or in old dry timber, a small pilot hole helps stop splitting.

What is the difference between a timber screw and a coach screw?

A traditional coach screw usually needs a pre-drilled pilot hole, a separate washer and a spanner. This TIMCO timber screw is the modern alternative. It drives straight in with an 8mm hex socket, has a built-in flange washer, and its partially threaded, deep-cut design pulls the timber together for a tighter, faster fixing with strong pull-out resistance. In most cases there's no drilling or washer needed.

Are they suitable for treated and exterior timber?

Yes. The patented multi-layer plating is tested to 1,000 hours salt spray and carries a corrosion rating of 3, so it suits exterior use in urban and industrial, low-salt atmospheres. That covers treated softwood, decking, fencing and sleepers. For coastal or permanently wet, high-salt environments, stainless steel fixings are the better choice.

What size socket or driver do they take?

They use an external hex drive with an 8mm socket (AF). Drive them with an impact driver and hex socket bit, or a socket wrench. The hex drive gives high torque with no cam-out.

What diameter and lengths are available?

Every variant is 6.7mm diameter, in a range of lengths (roughly 60mm up to 250mm), so you can specify the right embedment depth for everything from decking sub-frames to stacked sleepers.

What standard do these screws meet?

They're manufactured to BS EN 14592:2008, the European standard for dowel-type timber fasteners, and the coating is salt-spray tested to BS EN ISO 9227.
