Description

This is the small 3.5mm PZ1 gauge of the TIMCO Velocity screw. Velocity is built for rapid driving across many materials, and this finer size suits lighter joinery, trim and second-fix work where a heavier screw would be overkill or split thin timber. It keeps the patented Velocity thread and sharp point of the range in a slimmer shank. Gold ZYP finish for indoor and sheltered use.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Fast to drive. The Rapid Drive twist-cut shank cuts through timber and clears the waste, so each screw goes home quickly.
  • Superior hold. A serrated dual-angle thread grips the fibres and gives strong pull-out resistance.
  • Less splitting near edges. The Quick Start slash point (on 25mm and above) reduces splitting and lowers driving torque.
  • No timber jacking. Sizes from 40mm are partially threaded, so boards pull together instead of pushing apart.
  • Flush, tidy finish. The double countersunk head with ribs cleans out the recess as it seats, sitting the head neatly below the surface.
  • Secure driving. The Pozi PZ2 recess keeps the bit seated and cuts cam-out.
  • Wax lubricated. A wax coating helps the screw run in smoothly.
  • Corrosion rated. Zinc and yellow passivated finish with a Corrosion Rating of 2 for internal and sheltered work.

Usage / Application

One screw, a lot of trades. The Velocity works across a wide mix of materials, so it suits second fix joinery, general carpentry, kitchen and furniture assembly, decking sub-frames, studwork and site repairs. Handy on the tools list for:

  • Hardwood and softwood framing, batten and general timber fixing
  • Chipboard and MDF for cabinets, worktops and flat-pack builds
  • Fixing into thin sheet metal and plastic sections
  • Skirting, architrave and trim where a clean flush head matters
  • Edge fixing where splitting is a risk

Corrosion Rating 2 covers occasionally damp, rural and sheltered spots. For fully exterior or coastal work, step up to a higher-rated exterior screw.

FAQs

What are countersunk wood screws?

Countersunk wood screws have a cone-shaped head that pulls down level with, or just below, the timber surface. That gives a flush, tidy finish you can fill and paint over. The Velocity uses a double countersunk head with ribs, so the head clears the recess and seats cleanly as it drives.

Do I need to pre-drill before using these screws?

For most softwood and board work you can drive straight in. The Quick Start slash point gets going fast and reduces the chance of splitting. In dense hardwood, or when you are fixing very close to an end or edge, a small pilot hole is still worth it.

Will these screws split the timber near an edge?

They are built to reduce that risk. On sizes 25mm and above the slash point cuts a path as it enters, which lowers torque and helps stop the timber splitting when you fix near an edge. Sensible placement and a pilot hole in hardwood help too.

What materials can I use the Velocity in?

Plenty. It is rated for hardwood, softwood, chipboard, MDF, thin sheet metal and plastic. That mix is why it earns the multi-use name and why one box covers a lot of the day.

Why is the screw only partially threaded on longer sizes?

From 40mm the shank is partially threaded. The smooth upper section lets the top board pull tight against the one below rather than jacking the two apart. You get a firmer, closer joint.

What does the gold finish do?

The gold colour is a zinc and yellow passivated coating over carbon steel. It gives a Corrosion Rating of 2, which suits internal and sheltered use. For exposed outdoor jobs, pick a screw with a higher corrosion rating.
