Once ducting sections are fixed together with screws or rivets, foil tape goes over the joint to seal it airtight, stopping conditioned air leaking out before it reaches the room it's meant to. Adhesive foil tape vs standard duct tape
Not all adhesive tape is created equal. Ordinary cloth duct tape degrades and lifts under heat, sunlight and vibration, while a proper adhesive foil tape holds its bond and keeps ductwork performance consistent over years rather than months. The main thing that catches people out is applying a standard-grade tape in cold conditions.
